In the past cadmium brazing rods and lead-based solders have dominated the market, but this is set to change with the implementation of EC RoHS (Restriction on use of Hazardous Substances) and WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) directives. The same goes for boric acid and borax in fluxes that have been re-classified and categorized as toxic to reproduction. Likewise have soft solder fluxes containing Rosin (colophony) come under scrutiny because of causing cases of industrial asthma.
